HOME AND GIFT BUYERS FESTIVAL

349622_HG04_Facebook_with_logo_1200x628px_2017_v16

A key date in the retail buying calendar, the Home and Gift Buyers’ Festival remains the retail industry’s favourite. Flawlessly mixing business with that quintessentially British holiday vibe it’s a huge contrast to a ‘big, grey box’ event, Home and Gift stands out as how business really should be done. As the first event in the second buying season it’s the perfect opportunity to get your pick of product for A/W, Christmas and Spring.

For nearly 60 years Home & Gift has been the launch-pad for the greatest of giftware, jewellery, home, greetings products – gifts that have been craved, loved and cherished by generations of customers. We’ve built up a strong reputation amongst retailers, designers and manufacturers alike and always strive to provide a professional and friendly backdrop for sourcing products as well as networking and meeting industry leaders.

From its early years as a group of suppliers putting on a small event in a hotel, Home & Gift – or ‘Harrogate’ as many still know it – has grown to be a firmly-inked date in the diaries of generations of retailers and exhibitors.

Visitors have been coming to Home and Gift for years and some describe it as a gathering of old friends. The fact that visitors return again and again really is a testament to the value of the show – whether a large retailer or an independent trader, Home and Gift is a one stop shop for all buying needs.

LANKA KADE LAUNCH APPEAL TO RAISE FUNDS FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

Lanka Kade 1

Fair trade toy company Lanka Kade was founded in 1994 when husband and wife team, Upul and Diane, returned to the UK having met in Sri Lanka whilst working for the Red Cross. They did not want to lose contact with the country and the people they both love; therefore they set up a small import business to maintain links with Sri Lanka.

Last weekend Sri Lanka suffered devastating floods believed to be the worst since 2003 causing the displacement of over 630,000 people, with over 200 people confirmed to have lost their lives. We have been in constant contact with our Sri Lankan office since who have advised that four of the primary schools supported by the Lanka Kade Educational Foundation have been severely affected. The schools affected are Samaranayakapura Rerukana, Kimmanthudawa, Gallappahala and Kobawaka Sri Rahula. We have received the sad news that four pupils and their families have been killed in landslides, with many buildings submerged by up to 30 feet of water.

Whilst the government in Sri Lanka will contribute to the rebuilding of the schools over the coming years, this will take time. In the immediacy the schools will require the very basics such as pens, pencils, books and other essential classroom equipment so that they can reopen.

The purpose of fair trade is that trade is not aid – however, due to the magnitude of the floods and the sheer number of people affected; we are appealing for donations so that we can help these schools recover, and continue to offer the education so desperately needed and cherished by Sri Lankan children. We are looking to raise £10,000 to buy equipment for the schools supported by our Educational Foundation. Any donation, big or small will be gratefully received and directly help those affected.
Lanka Kade has launched an appeal on Just Giving where all money raised will be used to buy the following educational equipment in Sri Lanka:

  • pencils, pens and sharpeners
  • crayons or felt pens
  • art materials
  • colouring and picture books
  • classroom furniture including desks, chairs and chalkboards
  • lined and plain paper and notebooks

The link to our just giving page is: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/Lanka-Kade-Appeal

Lanka Kade is also arranging for a container to depart the UK at the beginning of July to support the families of pupils affected by the floods. We would gratefully receive any of the following:

  • summer clothes – both adult and child sizes; t-shirts and shorts (Unfortunately we can’t accept coats, jumpers or thick clothing due to the climate in Sri Lanka.)
  • group play toys  for example, building blocks, wooden train tracks, dominoes and dolls (please no battery operated toys)

You can drop off or post your donations to us at our UK Warehouse which in open Monday to Friday, 9am – until 5pm:

Lanka Kade (UK) Ltd
Unit C, Riverside End
Market Harborough
Leicestershire
LE16 7PU

We thank you in advance for your support – donations are hugely appreciated and we ask you to keep an eye on our social media pages for updates from Sri Lanka!  If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact Millie on 01858 463850.

AN AMERICAN TALE

Laura darrington 2

In order to get a better understanding of the US Greetings Card Market, Giftware Association members Laura Darrington Design decided to submit one of their Christmas designs into the LOUIE’s, the annual event that celebrates the best cards in the industry from all over the world and often called ‘The Oscars of Greeting Cards’ The American equivalent of the UK’s Henrie’s.  Thinking nothing of it but hopeful for a win, they were pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

Fast forward five months and Laura Darrington and Ross Harrison, BD Manager, are sat in the Edison Ballroom, just off New York’s Times Square, hearing the company’s name getting announced as eventual winners, winning in the Christmas seasonal category.

Laura Darrington said of the win “It was hugely unexpected, but very satisfying nevertheless to know our product translates well ‘over the pond’. We are absolutely delighted and enjoyed the whole experience of an American Awards Gala”

Laura Darrington 3

In order to finance their trip, the company approached the DIT (Department for International Trade) who were more than happy to grant them the money to celebrate their success in winning. “We are so thankful for the DIT for funding our trip so we could go and collect the award in person and soak up the award atmosphere” said Laura.

On returning to the UK, they have been approached by a variety of American distributors who are keen to work with them, proving that it is worth entering various competitions and the amount of exposure that can be gained from them. Also proving how well a UK company’s designs do translate ‘over the pond’.

About Laura Darrington

Laura Darrington Design Ltd. was founded at the beginning of 2004 and driven with the idea of bringing quality design-led products to the greetings card market.

After graduating in textiles/embroidery, Laura’s primary concern was to translate beautiful designs onto an affordable product. She kept her knowledge of texture, colour, surface pattern & stitch and incorporated these skills into luxurious greetings cards for all occasions.

Now in her 13th year of business, Laura’s initial driving force is still the same, only now she has a lot more industry knowledge and experience to translate the product to a wider audience.

All of the above factors combined have helped create a unique collection of greetings cards that have found their niche within the market and formed a reputable brand.

STAR SPEAKERS CONFIRMED FOR OUR 70 BIRTHDAY

Print

The Giftware Association is 70 this year, and as many of you know we are throwing a party here in Birmingham to celebrate.

We’re having a Members’ Day on Wednesday 21st June between 2pm and 5.30, with afternoon tea and a chance to meet our service providers, but we will also be hosting talks by our three star speakers.

Andy Powell

Andy Powell, a vice president at Cap Gemini, will be speaking about the upcoming GDPR legislation – given the low awareness rates among the UK’s SMEs, we think this is a crucial topic for our Members’ Day. Andy is a great speaker, and an expert on the subject.

Marriot Lusengo

Marriott Lusengo of Forward Thinking Digital will be talking about the future of digital marketing, and how your business can adapt and survive in an increasingly ‘noisy’ online space.

Geoff Ramm

Our headline speaker is Geoff Ramm, whose talk about Celebrity Service is an international hit. Geoff’s advice about how to treat your customers like royalty (and why you should) is not to be missed. His international talks are extremely well attended, so this is a fantastic chance to see him face-to-face.

Of course, in the evening we all like to let our hair down, so we will be hosting a barbecue, and entertaining you with live music and other entertainment. It’s our event of the year, and we hope you can all come along! If you are interested, visit http://bit.ly/giftware70 for more information and to book your place.

Manchester Stationery Show announced

THE NEW MANCHESTER STATIONERY SHOW WIL RUN ON TUESDAY 31 OCTOBER AND WEDNESDAY 1 NOVEMBER.

A specialist writing and paper products show, focused on design led and fashion-forward product; run at the perfect time for buyers to select product for the new year.

WHY MANCHESTER?

the London Stationery Show reveals a clear pattern of attracting a southern biased audience – with just over 65% of all visitors travelling to the show from London and the South East.

This is reflected by national high street data which shows a 60/40 split in stationery and gift retailers based south and north of the midlands.

The choice of Manchester as a location is based on its links not only to the north of England, but also the Midlands, making it well placed to become a stationery magnet for the region.

Manchester 3

WHO DO YOU WANT TO MEET IN MANCHESTER?

As a stationery supplier, you want to meet people from across the industry, with the power to make decisions. Like London, the Manchester Stationery Show will be a specialist show, with a clear product offer from leading brands and suppliers.

This offer will be supported by key features; a seminar program offering views from across the industry and insights into the latest trends and fashions, a Manchester LaunchPad to draw in new talent from the area, a Creative Hub to get visitors hands-on and engaged and a New Product Display area to showcase new developments.

The Manchester Stationery Show already has access to the UK industry key players and to current retailer and buyer data.

the London Show attracts visitors from across the industry including booksellers, craft retailers, dealers and wholesalers, department and variety stores, gift and greeting card retailers, mail order and online business, visitor attractions, specialist print & copy shops and stationers and all the national supermarkets. Just under 50% of visitors to The London Stationery Show do not visit Top Drawer or Spring Fair.

The corresponding data for the Midlands and North shows a similar mix of business, with a slightly greater proportion of independent chains, but less grocery head offices

WHERE WILL YOU BE MEETING THEM?

The Cotton Sheds at Victoria Warehouse are historic, and cool – which sums up both Manchester and our chosen venue nicely. The Victoria Warehouse is a solid Mancunian landmark which has been developed into a modern, industrial space that we can make our own.

Easily accessible from both the North and South by car, train, tram and bus, the Cotton Sheds sit within a great transport network with a good choice of travel options for our target audience.

Scotland Trade Autumn

Scotlands Trade Fair 1

Christmas seems to come earlier each year but as a retailer, it’s good to be organised. So make sure Scotland’s Trade Fair Autumn is firmly in your diary from 17-18th Sept at the SECC, Glasgow. It’s the last chance to order pre-Christmas and there is a spectacular line up of exhibitors this year.

Over 130 exhibitors have been contracted so far and offer a great variety of gifts, homewares, jewellery, accessories as well as food and drink gifts. New to the Show are Ty, the big beanie toy specialists, Sandia Silver’s exquisite jewellery, White Rabbit skincare and House of Tweed, as well as many more. With bookings up on last year and a successful tourist season predicted it is hoped the Show will be at capacity this year.

Retailers love Scotland’s Autumn Show as it is more intimate than many others and always has a wide selection of friendly exhibitors and interesting products that will meet the needs of the 1500 buyers that attend.

A central feature of the Show is the Launch Gallery for young, original companies under two years old. This year’s Gallery includes J Boult Designs with his original men’s gifts, Christopher Dawson Heritage homewares, and Wild at Art Design high-quality souvenirs and gifts.

Repeat orders are a big feature of the Autumn Show and there are certain established companies that form the backbone of the event. Earth Squared’s bags and fashion accessories are always popular gifts, as are Highland Stoneware, Leather Guild, Pocket Mountains and Sheila Fleet Jewellery. Other stands that stand out with some particularly great new products will be Siabann (The Ochil Skincare company), Stag Design, Tartan Twist, Claire Baird, Beesy’s Beeswax Candles, and Urban Outline candles.

Food and drink exhibitors are included following their inaugural success with tasty Christmas gifts last year and include companies such as Chrystals Shortbread, Scotia Spice, The Chilli Experience and Annie D’s Scottish Confectionery.

Mark Saunders, MD of Springboard Events, who organises the Show said: “Our Autumn Show provides the perfect platform for re-stocking for the frantic Christmas retail season. There is an excellent mix of really interesting exhibitors with gifts for all retailers from clothes to food, accessories to homewares. With a wide range of price points this Show is certainly not to be missed if you want to succeed in the final quarter of 2017.”

Karen Shand from gift shops Proposals said: “I like the timing of the Show and especially being able to come here when you’ve seen a lot of the other shows but there are still gaps in your buying. It’s on my doorstep and I always place lots of orders.”
